The High Price of Materialism

I had very high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, the book didn’t live up to my expectations. This book can be summed up by the old adage: “Money doesn’t buy happiness”. This is a realization that I came to a long time ago.

The books lists all kinds of results of studies performed on materialism. They all come to the same conclusion, that more material things, and the pursuit of material possessions won’t make you happy. No kidding!!! This book didn’t really provide me with any new insights of any significance. One area that I think it completely missed was the subject of boredom, and how that leads to materialism and consumption. Personally, I think boredom is one of the leading causes of consumerism. Another area I would have liked to seen some research on is the public school system, and how it is producing an army of young consumers. Unfortunately, the role of the public school system only received a few paragraphs.

If you think that money can buy happiness, and that the pursuit of more material possessions is fulfilling, then you should probably read this book.
